This Ground Beef Philly Skillet is the PERFECT family-friendly, macro-friendly meal to make on a weeknight. My fam LOVES it, and it only takes about 30 minutes to make! 🙌🏻

Macro-friendly Ground Beef Philly Skillet in large skillet on wooden cutting board with gold spoon and green onions underneath.

About This Recipe

It’s super versatile and easy to fit in your macros because you can serve it so many different ways. You can eat it on a toasted bun with some Quick Mustard aioli, tucked into a sweet potato, or even over this simple roasted spaghetti squash.

My family loves it on a bun, but no matter how you choose to serve it, it’s sure to be a hit!

Making this Philly skillet is easy and great for weeknights especially when you’re wanting something fresh and yummy that isn’t going to take you all day in the kitchen. Of course, there is some chopping, so make sure you have a sharp knife and a cutting board to make the chopping easy.

Ingredients and Substitutions

  • Mushrooms: I used white mushrooms for this recipe but baby bellas will also work!
  • Bell pepper: I prefer to use a red, orange or yellow bell pepper as they are much sweeter than green peppers.
  • Onion: Yellow or white onion both work!
  • Ground beef: I buy my 96/4 ground beef at Sprouts and it’s labeled 4.5 fat/4oz. If you use a higher fat option and track your macros, you’d be pretty safe to simply manually add the difference in fat (for a 4 oz portion) to your macro-counting app of choice.
  • Worcestershire Sauce: This tangy, savory sauce is the secret ingredient that elevates the flavor of the ground beef in this Philly Ground Beef Skillet.
  • Garlic: You can use minced garlic or my preference is always the frozen garlic cubes!!
  • Cheese: You can use provolone, sharp white cheddar, or mozzarella cheese. Freshly grated is best for taste and meltiness!

Dietary Adaptations

This recipe is gluten-free, just make sure to grab gluten-free Worcestershire Sauce. Of course, if you want to eat it on a bun, then you’ll want to get a gluten-free bun as well. I wrote this quick gluten-free post if you want some of my fav gluten-free swaps. Or you can eat it on top of spaghetti squash, on a bed of greens, or your favorite gluten-free carb.

If you need it to be dairy-free, simply skip the cheese at the end. Or you can swap it for your favorite dairy-free cheese. I wrote this quick list of my favorite dairy-free swaps for easy reference!

How to Make

  1. Heat a large, heavy skillet to high heat. Spray the pan with a spritz of olive oil and let that heat for a minute. Add the mushrooms along with half of the salt, and the pepper. Cook for three minutes. Add the peppers and diced onions and cook for an additional 5 minutes, stirring often until the veggies are fragrant and tender.
  2. Push the veggies to one side of the pan and add your ground beef and remaining salt. Using a meat masher or a wooden spoon, break up the meat until it’s browned and cooked through. Add the Worcestershire sauce and garlic and continue to cook for about two minutes. Add any additional salt and pepper to taste.
  3. Turn off the heat and top with grated cheese. Cover until the cheese is melty. Enjoy on toasted buns, on a baked potato, over rice, or your favorite low-carb base like cauliflower rice or spaghetti squash!

Serving Suggestions

This recipe is one of the first recipes that wasn’t from my Instagram or cookbooks that I launched only in my meal plan subscription.

For the meal plan, we served this with a quick mustard aioli on a toasted brioche bun! Perfection. But if you’re trying to keep your carbs low, then you can enjoy this over a bed of greens, with chopped lettuce like a taco salad, tucked in a sweet potato, etc. The options are endless.

If you want to try and sneak the mushrooms past your kids, throw them in the food processor and pulse until they’re nice and crumbly. It’ll blend right in with the ground beef! I like to get my mushrooms cooked down pretty good if I have any chance of getting them past my boys.

My husband and I love this recipe! Simple and easy to make on a worknight, which is always a plus for our busy lives. I keep meaning to try it with the mustard aioli but always seem to forget to make it. The good thing is, it’s delicious without it.

Would love to try this recipe, but the advertising you allow on your page is cancerous and makes your page unusable. I did manage to get to this comment page though, so I thought you might want to know.

Going to try this soon! Do you think ground turkey or ground chicken could substitute the ground beef, or would that not be as good? Thank you!
