These Healthy French Fries are the most legit, macro-friendly fries! They’re air-fried (or baked) instead of deep-fried, and use just enough oil to deliver that classic fry texture without a lot of heaviness.

About This Recipe

Okay, this Healthy French Fry recipe is truly like magic, and my family is obsessed! There are a few key tricks for getting the perfect, salty, crispy fries (without having to deep fry them).

The first is to use a fry cutter. It’s not required, but this gadget is truly one of those that’s worth it. Wash and dry the potatoes, and the next (and most important) is to air fry them (yes, you can bake them, but the air fryer is better). Then, after they get nice and crispy in the air fryer, hit them with a spray of olive oil and a pinch of salt and garlic, and enjoy!!

Enjoy these fries alongside burgers, chicken, or straight off the pan!

Ingredients and Substitutions

  • Potatoes: You’ll need 4lbs of russet potatoes. I don’t bother peeling, but you can if you prefer!
  • Olive oil: Or you can use avocado oil.
  • Kosher salt: I love the Redmond or Maldon kosher salt!
  • Garlic powder: I kept these fries simple with just salt and garlic powder, but feel free to throw in any additional seasonings you prefer!

Dietary Adaptations

GF/DF: Naturally!

How To Make

  1. Use a fry cutter or slice your potato into thin slices like a loaf of bread, then cut each of those slices into skinny french fries. I don’t bother peeling, but you can if you prefer! Add the dry, unseasoned fries to your air fryer or a large parchment-lined/greased baking sheet. Air fry at 400°F, or bake at 425°F for about 20-25 minutes or until golden brown. Toss every 6-8 minutes in the air-fryer, or toss halfway through if using the oven. (The oven might need a little longer cook time.)
  2. When they’re browned and crispy, remove from the air/fryer oven, toss or spray with oil, and season generously with salt and a little garlic. You can get creative and add any of your favorite seasonings here, too! Seasoned salt, paprika, onion powder, parsley… Enjoy immediately!

Helpful Tips

  • Use a fry cutter: This is honestly the easiest and best way to get even-sized fries that cook up nice and crispy!
  • Slice potatoes evenly: However, if you don’t have a fry cutter, try to slice your potatoes into even-sized skinny fries so that they will cook evenly! Slicing the potatoes unevenly can cause some potatoes to not bake in time, while others will be overdone.
  • Air fry if possible: Using the air fryer is best if you have one! It really allows the fries to get nice and crispy without having to use a ton of extra oil!
  • Don’t overcrowd the pan: If baking in the oven, be sure to spread the fries out evenly on your sheet pan. Use an XL sheet pan, or spread between two pans.
  • Extra seasonings: Feel free to get creative and add any of your favorite seasonings here, too! Seasoned salt, paprika, onion powder, parsley…
